Quilter: Songs

John Mark Ainsley’s silken tones lovingly trace the natural flow of Roger Quilter’s sweetly fragrant songs and Malcolm Martineau reveals all the subtleties of their inventive and evocative accompaniments. This collection includes the early masterpieces, written mostly before the First World War, and the later works, more often routine. But even routine Quilter charms. There are three lots of Shakespeare settings, including the earliest (1905) and most successful set which includes the beautiful ‘Come away, death’.

So much is memorable: the haunting ‘Ich fühle deinen Odem’, the lovely ‘Now sleeps the crimson petal’, the exquisite ‘Go, lovely rose’ and ‘The Lamplighter’, unerringly capturing the magic of childhood. A truly enchanting collection. Ian Lace
