Bach: Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1001-6

When these recordings were first issued in 1983, Zehetmair was in his early twenties with a young man’s verve and exuberance. His tone is nicely varied and, give or take the occasional catching of a neighbouring string and the odd sour note in the double-stopping, his technique is fine. But he takes the Romantic view, and in the slow movements the elasticity of pulse and frequent agogic accents disturb the flow. The sound has just the right degree of resonance. Wadham Sutton
