Bach: Goldberg Variations; Three-Part Invention No. 2; Three-Part Invention No. 3; Three-Part Invention No. 4; Three-Part Invention No. 5; Three-Part Invention No. 6; Three-Part Invention No. 7; Three-Part Invention No. 8; Three-Part Invention No.9; Three

This third Goldberg in Sony’s ongoing Glenn Gould series was recorded live in Salzburg in 1959, midway between his famous first recording of the work and his decision to give up public performance. There is the same dazzling, effortless technical command and clarity, but, performing before an audience, an even stronger sense of self-communion. The recording of the Three-Part Inventions, from Gould’s legendary 1957 Russian tour, needs much more tolerance, but again the performance is something special. David Michaels
