Szymon Goldberg’s famous version of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos is distinguished by stately elegance and subtle handling of textures, such as in the first concerto, where the slight distancing of the horns creates the opportunity for the internal detail more fully to take effect. In the violin concertos, the luscious smoothness of Goldberg’s approach is most appealing. A warmly sympathetic performance of the cantata Vergnügte Ruh’, beliebte Seelenlust is also included. The recordings have lasted well. Nicholas Rast
