Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988

Gustav Leonhardt approaches the glorious Goldbergs as if approaching an old yet revered friend, with affection, care and respect. There is a happy variety of expression and the harpsichord tone is remarkably resonant. The one aspect with which I would argue is that in those variations which call for a more virtuosic approach, such as the penultimate toccata variation, he maintains an over-ponderous outlook and seems unable to revel in the technical glitter which is so clearly written into the music.

Although there is much beauty in his interpretation, it lacks the ebullient sense of joy which certain other interpreters, such as András Schiff on the modern piano, can draw out. Jessica Duchen
