Bach: find works

Though he has lately been recording vast areas of the choral repertoire with almost unseemly haste, Helmuth Rilling is chiefly known as a Bach interpreter. These performances of two substantial secular cantatas date from the mid-Sixties, before his extensive cycle for Hänssler. They boast reliable orchestral playing and some good solo singing, mostly from names who are now unfamiliar; mercifully there’s little for the breathy chorus to do in either work.

They boast reliable orchestral playing and some good solo singing, mostly from names who are now unfamiliar; mercifully there’s little for the breathy chorus to do in either work. Neither work is on a par with the finest sacred cantatas, but each has its moments, even if these accounts are somewhat strait-laced and over-forceful. Helmut Winschermann’s concerto performances share the same robust interpretative approach. Stephen Maddock
