Bach: Partita No. 3 in A minor, BWV 827; Partita No. 4 in D, BWV 828; Partita No. 5 in G, BWV 829

Boston Skyline, from its eclectic vaults, has reissued Nos 3, 4 and 5 of Bach’s Partitas recorded in 1958 by Ralph Kirkpatrick, a noted pioneer of the harpsichord and Scarlatti biographer to boot. As an executant he was outstanding in his day, and still presents sterling qualities in this CD, where the sound is reminiscent of a smallish room rather than a church (Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin).

For these sessions he makes use of a Neupert two-manual harpsichord, varying the timbre and dynamic patterns in a fairly strict but acceptable manner, and bringing to these challenging works a mastery of touch and technique that can impress the most fastidious of modern harpsichord-fanciers.
