Bach, Haydn, Chopin, Schubert

From the intellectual austerity of his Bach to the mercurial brilliance of his Rachmaninov, this generously filled two-CD set is a wonderful conspectus of Richter’s playing in reasonably acceptable sound. It would be difficult to imagine a more emotionally penetrating rendition of Schubert’s C minor Allegretto, or a more subtle control of nuance in Debussy’s Estampes.
