Beethoven: String Trios, Op. 9/1, 2, 3

It’s remarkable, considering this is Beethoven, that there are only five other recordings of the Op. 9 Trios in the catalogue. For these trios are not mere rehearsals for the string quartets, but excellent chamber music in their own right, using a wide range of textures. The Cummings Trio, with their former cellist Geoffrey Thomas, play with an understated subtlety well suited to music meant for intimate surroundings, yet extract every ounce of drama from the C minor trio. The string tone is sweet, but the recorded sound does little to enhance it, being somewhat flat. Janet Banks
