Authenticists Coin and Cohen lead the field as period exponents of Beethoven’s cello and piano music. Beethoven’s greatest work for these instruments – the Sonata in A, Op. 69 – is magnificently realised. Christophe Coin’s gut-strung cello resounds heroically and is never outshone by Patrick Cohen’s compliant, Romantically-infused accompaniments. This duo respects period protocols but conveys the daring modernity of Beethoven’s concepts in this uniquely compelling account of Op. 69. The two sets of Variations are winningly characterised and receive authoritative and beautifully recorded performances. Highly recommended. Michael Jameson
