Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D; Egmont Overture

Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is one of the longest concertos in the repertoire, the first movement alone lasting nearly 25 minutes. If the tempi are even slightly on the slow side, the work can become quite a solid affair. Such is the case with this performance despite fine, if at times rather too measured, playing from Hermann Krebbers. Haitink magnificently brings out the calling and answering between solo violin and wind. A thrilling Egmont is the filler. Annette Morreau
