Beethoven/Brahms: Triple Concerto

It is not to belittle the contributions of a fine crop of soloists to say that this disc belongs to the Berlin RSO and Fricsay. Both works were recorded towards the end of the conductor’s brief career, and they offer a striking contrast: a questing, passionate Brahms Double following a meditative and lovely reading of the Beethoven Triple. The common factor is Fricsay’s impeccable sense of shape which seems to make of whole movements one long, memorable utterance. Christopher Wood
