The soloist in the Requiem’s Sanctus is the Domingo of a decade ago, a soaring, full-throated sound. There is a real buzz from Barenboim’s ability to manoeuvre and shape Berlioz’s massive orchestral and choral forces, but the tenors are consistently untuneful and the sopranos very ragged in the fugal passages. The impact of the Requiem is not lost in this rather recessed recording, but it is diminished by the uneven singing. Elisse McDougall
