Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique; Ballet Music from Les troyens; Royal Hunt and Storm from Les troyens

Abbado’s 1984 recording of the Symphonie fantastique is preferable for its greater poetic quality. Mehta’s account, reissued here, is far more impetuous, although the energy of this performance is all the more compelling for the extraordinary clarity of the recording itself. The playing on the remainder of the disc is also high. The audience participation in the final piece is a little disturbing.
