Berlioz/Faure

The unlikely coupling of these two settings of the Requiem Mass gives rise to some interesting correspondences (the use of old church modes, for example). Sadly, the rather flat recording does not do justice to the thoughtful and accomplished performances: the suppression of dynamic contrasts is especially damaging to so large-scale a work as Berlioz’s Grande messe des morts.
