Berners: The Triumph of Neptune Suite; Fugue for Orchestra

Lord Berners (1883-1950) was an extraordinary and eccentric figure, whose creative muse was well suited to the theatre, and to ballet in particular. The most substantial piece on this excellent disc is The Triumph of Neptune, which reveals Berners as a kind of British Satie, abounding in wit. The other pieces are worth hearing too, for though the music’s expressive range is limited, its virtues are communicated in these sympathetic performances. Terry Barfoot
