This is a very welcome reissue.Being French may not be a pre-requisite for conducting Bizet’s utterly delightful music, but Yan Pascal Tortelier makes a very convincing case for it in these performances. The Ulster Orchestra produces some ravishing sounds, at once swaggering, passionate and dramatic. The pace is fast. Impossible to believe that both stage works were initially failures.
