‘Four key works... of our time’ celebrating twenty years of the Ensemble InterContemporain. Boulez’s cummings ist der dichter (1970, rev. 1986) remains captivatingly, stubbornly for ever new. Donatoni’s Tema (1982) and Carter’s Penthode (1985) represent other distinguished modernists. But Gérard Grisey’s Modulations (1978) was the work which impressed me most: an early example (its composer was 31 at the time) of this sometimes exasperating Frenchman’s innovative exploration of harmony and timbre to yield music with followable shapes and astonishing power.
