Brahms: Symphony No. 1

This is not the most polished performance of this symphony that you are likely to come across, but it bowls along with splendid energy. It has an impressive unity of vision and a sense of occasion that suggests a ‘live’ recording, which it is not. Janowski manipulates the tempi with the precision of a Formula One driver, with risk and danger never far away. It’s as close to a romp as you will ever get with Brahms. Christopher Lambton
