Brahms/Schumann/Debussy

This generous collection would be tremendous value, if it weren’t for the uncertain quality of most of the performances. Dangain plays with refinement, but gives a rather detached reading of the Brahms and Schumann, missing the poetry of some of the more subtle moments. The Romantic nature of these pieces demands a warmer approach than his typically French sound – cool, silvery and focused, with minimal vibrato – can give.

The Rhapsodie, one of Debussy’s favourite works, is more successful, relying as it does on atmospheric playing and technical expertise; Dangain is completely at home here, his sound well-suited.
