Britten/Delius/Vaughan Williams

Only last year I reviewed over half the contents of this CD (on DG Galleria 439 529-2), giving a three-star rating to the RVW and Delius readings. Why another incarnation so soon? The only new item here is Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings. Although it does not quite match the subtlety and eloquence of the classic Decca recording with Peter Pears, Barry Tuckwell and Britten conducting, this is nevertheless a worthy contender. Robert Tear, showing a strong expressive range (his ‘Dirge’ is particularly chilling), is splendidly supported by Giulini and Clevenger. Ian Lace
