Bruckner: Symphony No. 3 (Original 1873 version)

'First time lucky' wasn't exactly Bruckner's motto, although his Third Symphony would surely have justified it. Here it is in all its original, extravagant splendour, complete with Wagner quotations, repetitions, searing climaxes, mysterious interludes, glorious chorales and haunting melodies. How could his contemporaries have wanted it shorter? Expansiveness is part of the symphony's spirit and once heard, later amputations seem quite unforgivable. Inbal's performance is extremely fine; the recording excellent. Robert Cowan
