Bruckner: Symphony No. 9

Mehta is at his best at the blazing moments for the brass, of which there are a fair share in the Ninth. His reading tends to meander in the outer movements, whose tender moments are often cloyingly sentimental, despite fine playing by the orchestra. The scherzo, on the other hand, is rhythmically alert, the sound exhilarating and the tempi well judged. This is an extrovert view of Bruckner which rather contradicts the character of the composer and this work in particular. Christopher Fifield
