Bruckner: Symphony No. 6 in A

The highlight of this Karajan recording of a Bruckner symphony now gaining wider and deserved recognition is a particularly committed account of the Adagio, a highly personalised and moving creation by its composer. Predictably, Karajan (nowadays overshadowed by finer conductors of Bruckner) also excels in the brassy and strongly rhythmic Scherzo, with superlative playing by the Berliners.

The outer movements occasionally waver at the structural junctions; it sometimes seems a while before the ear can establish the new pulse, but this may also be due in part to the acoustics of the city’s Philharmonie.
