Charpentier: Motets for one and two voices

After nearly three centuries of neglect, Charpentier is at last being recognised as one of the great Baroque composers. This selection of religious motets for one and two voices – devotional music that is both noble and tenderly expressive – is a fine introduction to his work. René Jacobs and Judith Nelson sing beautifully, the latter especially so on the poignant ‘Magdalena lugens’, and the continuo playing is very graceful. Documentation, though, is scanty. Graham Lock
