Anonymous, Christmas Traditional, Philippe Le Chancelier, St. Godrich: Medieval English Lyrics, Rounds & Carols

Another welcome reissue on this label, this time from the Sixties. You will not hear finer recordings of the ‘Agincourt’ carol, nor the ‘Boar’s Head’ carol, nor ‘Sumer is icumen in’. The ‘Go hert’ track, with its barnacles of embellishment, now seems dated, and the robotic brusqueness of ‘Fulget hodie’ is perhaps more Smurf than ‘merthe’. But ‘Pray for us’ and ‘Lux hodie’ are sweetly sung by two young hopefuls – Robert Tear and Ian Partridge. Anthony Pryer
