Corelli: Sonatas for violin and cello or harpsichord, Op. 5

Corelli’s magnificent set of solo sonatas, published in 1700, is played with graceful mastery by Trio Sonnerie and Nigel North. The spotlight falls on violinist Monica Huggett, the featured soloist; she’s soulful in the slow movements, zestful in the fast, breathtakingly fleet in the elaborate ornamentation. I doubt even the ‘eyeball-rolling’ Corelli could top her bravura. Continuo support is sensitive and discreetly varied (organ, archlute, theorbo; Baroque guitar on the Follia Variations). An excellent release. Graham Lock
