Corelli: Concerti Grossi, Op. 6

Corelli’s Op. 6 concertos are extraordinarily versatile. As the three soloists always double orchestral strings, a trio alone can reproduce all the essential notes. Yet one contemporary gala performance reportedly sported some eighty players. Goodman adopts the middle course, his forces marginally larger than Corelli’s own orchestra in Rome. Bar a rare moment of waspish intonation, this is elegant playing – energetic allegros, spacious solo/tutti contrasts, finely poised in the endlessly-spun slow harmonies. Archlute continuo colours delightfully. George Pratt
