Debussy: find works

When the 32-year-old Ciani died in 1974, the world lost one of music’s natural aristocrats. A keen sense of proportion, meticulous attention to clarity of texture and a respectful fidelity to Debussy’s text are all evident here, untainted by the faintest whiff of pedantry. This is admirable playing, lovingly remastered. Vásáry’s Debussy is more sensual – more fanciful perhaps – and, ultimately, more seductive. If Ciani gave us Debussy as Mozart might have played him, Vásáry plays him as Chopin might have. Either way, this is a thoroughly welcome reissue. Jeremy Siepmann
