Dunstaple: Motets: Veni sancte spiritus; Preco preheminenciae

When this disc first appeared in 1984, it was one of the first recordings of this medieval to dispense with instruments in the lower parts and rely on voices alone. This reissue ensures the glorious result can now be heard again. These are wonderfully lithe and sonorous accounts, especially of Dunstaple’s masterpieces, the motets ‘Veni sancte spiritus’ and ‘Preco preheminenciae’. The performances of these particular works remain unsurpassed, despite a recent commendable version by the Orlando Consort (on Metronome). Anthony Pryer
