Dutilleux: Symphony No. 1; Symphony No. 2 (Le double); Ainsi la nuit; Mystère de l'instant; Métaboles; Timbres, espace, mouvement; Les citations; Piano Sonata

Henri Dutilleux is perhaps the most overlooked of living composers. Never seeking inclusion among the avant-garde, the eighty-year-old Frenchman has hardly been conservative and has certainly not lacked inventiveness. Moreover, with his supple rhythmic approach, unabashed penchant for melodies, fondness for nature and sensitivity to colour and harmony, Dutilleux is unequivocally French. Individual performances may be bettered elsewhere, but this generous set, including most of Dutilleux’s major works, can be strongly recommended to anyone interested in his music. Christopher Dingle
