Dvorak: Serenade for Strings, Op. 22; Serenade for Wind, Op. 44

Under the direction of their then (1985) leader, the Philharmonia strings produce a velvety-smooth sound in the E major Serenade, though their quality of tone is obscured by the over-reverberant acoustic. In addition, Warren-Green’s pacing is sluggish, though he proves adept at turning the music’s corners gracefully in the Scherzo. Rather than developing organically, the D minor Wind Serenade also suffers from a bar-by-bar approach, but there is some lovely work from individual players. George Hall
