Elgar: Symphony No. 1; Symphony No. 2; Pomp and Circumstance Marches 1, 3 & 5; In the South

Davis’s magnificent recordings of the Elgar symphonies were Michael Jameson’s top choice in the BBC Music Magazine Top 1000 CDs Guide. I share his opinion: they are first-class. Davis’s First Symphony Adagio is sublime, and the big Romantic tune and coda of the finale have real sweep and grandeur. The Second Symphony is the best modern recording available: the Larghetto is very moving. With an electrifying In the South and glorious Pomp and Circumstance Marches, this is a superb bargain.
