Elgar/Bliss

Campoli’s exquisitely sensitive playing – even in his early sixties – suited Elgar’s rhapsodic concerto to perfection. There is not a shred of bombast, and the emotional content of the piece, though never ignored, is not over-stated (hardly surprising with the restrained Sir Adrian conducting). Two short works by Bliss – who himself wrote a concerto for Campoli – make an apt coupling. The close recording is admirably clear but does sound its age. Stephen Maddock
