Falla: The Three-Cornered Hat; Love of the Magician; Nights in the Gardens of Spain

Falla: The Three-Cornered Hat; Love of the Magician; Nights in the Gardens of Spain

Garish, metallic-sounding transfers, but this is still vintage Giulini; waywardly idiosyncratic, unpredictable, yet tantalisingly good! Walter Legge's hand-picked players are joined by Victoria de los Angeles in Falla's Love of the Magician, keenly evocative and sounding less fierce than Giulini's undeniably exciting The Three-Cornered Hat. Gonzalo Soriano's account of Nights in the Gardens of Spain completes this generous disc. Tolerable solo playing, but marred by scrappy orchestral playing under Fruhbeck de Burgos. Michael Jameson
