Falla: Atlántida (arr. Halffter); El sombrero de tres picos

Setting a lengthy Catalan poem on the myth of the lost continent of Atlantis, Falla’s ‘scenic cantata’, or oratorio, was completed by Ernesto Halffter. Too episodic and uneven to be really successful as a whole, Atlántida is nevertheless stuffed with good things, nationalist, Romantic and modernist by turns. Worth hearing, even in a performance that has more vigour than rigour. A sparkling Three-Cornered Hat from the Philharmonia completes this almost two-and-a-half-hour, two-disc set. Excellent documentation. Keith Potter
