Faure: Violin Concerto; Berceuse

Only the opening Allegro movement remains from Fauré’s early Violin Concerto. Strongly influenced by Wagner, the young composer wanted to mark his entry into the symphonic sphere with a work of grand proportions. Unfortunately, Fauré’s ambitions were not realised – the concerto was never completed and his contribution to orchestral repertoire can only be described as minimal. Bonucci brings enthusiasm to the work but lacks the skill to perform it successfully. The other works feel like fillers, and are performed accordingly. Christopher Dingle
