Franck: Symphony in D minor; Symphonic Variations; Prélude, Choral et Fugue

Martinon’s account of the Symphony is elegant, clear-cut and more expressive than some of his other recordings of French music. The Symphonic Variations are equally flowing and well-shaped, though Entremont’s responses to the trenchant opening figure on the strings are heavy-handed, and the ensemble is uncomfortable, briefly, from around 14:18 mins. It’s good to have Devoyon’s satisfying interpretation of the solo Prélude, Choral et Fugue back in the catalogue. There are no insert notes. Wadham Sutton
