Glazunov/Prokofiev/Shchedrin

Two of these three strange bedfellows almost join hands thanks to Mutter’s dark, vibrato-laden intensity. Even so, Glazunov – whose reactionary but songful rhapsody is well served by Mutter’s keen forward sense of movement – would surely scowl at the Scythian aspect Mutter magnifies in Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto. Shchedrin’s Stihira is a purely orchestral work. After occasional harsher glares, these simple variations on a liturgical chant finally – if belatedly – cast a spell as they return to dimly-lit Orthodox roots. David Nice
