Grieg: Lyric Pieces (excerpts)

This is a useful anthology taken from the Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl’s complete survey of Grieg’s piano music, which appeared on the BIS label on nine separate discs in the 1980s. The 26 pieces include representatives from each of the volumes of Lyric Pieces and other collections – the Poetic Tone Pictures, the Humoresques, and so on – and are vivid testamony to Grieg’s potent abilities as an illustrative miniaturist. There’s also a curiosity, a Funeral March written in 1866 that shows a conspicuously Lisztian side of the young Grieg.

Knardahl plays a bright-toned Bösendorfer: fine readings, though occasionally her attack seems a touch too strident and aggressive. Stephen Pettitt
