Handel: Concerti Grossi Op. 6; Concerto Grosso (Alexander's Feast)

Alongside modern period performances, these pioneering recordings, made in 1975, seem curiously old-fashioned. Indeed, Collegium Aureum often sounds as Romantic as the symphony orchestras it set out to displace. Over-sized forces, ponderous tempi and fussy ornamentation do scant justice to Handelian style and this richly inventive music. Not recommended, even at mid-price. Antony Bye
