Hartmann/Hindemith

Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s anguished Concerto, composed at the outbreak of the Second World War, provides an eloquent testimony of the composer’s staunch opposition to the Nazis. Concurrently, Hindemith also fell foul of the regime, but his response in these two powerful works appears to have been more resigned than defiant. Stirring performances from Gertler and Ancerl, though the Cello Concerto, recorded in mono, suffers from a rather primitive balance between soloist and orchestra. Erik Levi
