Haydn (Michael): Horn Concerto in D; Duo Concertante for Organ and Viola; Divertimento in G; 6 Minuets

The major pieces here are the quirky Horn Concerto, with its virtuoso solo part, and the Duo Concertante, which boasts a jaunty Allegro, lovely Adagio and curious viola/organ pairing. These Sixties recordings were made on modern instruments, so the sound is mushy compared with the sharper timbres of period performances. The playing, though, is first-class and Michael Haydn’s little-recorded music, from the cusp of Classical/Baroque, exerts a diffident charm. Graham Lock
