Hoddinott: Symphony No. 2; Symphony No. 3; Symphony No. 5

These symphonies, composed between 1962 and 1972, are powerful and intensely serious compositions. The most approachable of them is No. 3, which has a particularly colourful orchestral palette, with the emphasis on rich textures rather than refinement. The other works, though tougher nuts to crack, will repay careful listening as the cogent symphonic thinking becomes more clear with each hearing. The performances are by major orchestras and conductors, and all three sound well, emphasising the range of Hoddinott’s musical style. Terry Barfoot
