Joplin: Piano Rags and Waltzes

Affable, amusing and technically discreet playing from William Conley in yet another selection of Joplin favourites. But however well played the music may be, there are obvious limitations, given the nature of the genres involved; much of this material becomes trite and tedious after repeated listening. But with that proviso understood, it would seem churlish to find fault with William Conley’s enthusiastic and sensitively judged playing. The recording is brightly lit, though at budget price is certainly worth considering if the ragtime idiom appeals. Michael Jameson
