JS Bach: Cantatas BWV 67,108 & 127

Period-instrument crispness may have been lacking 30 years ago, but a dignity and robustness pervade Richter's Bach, offset by some fine violin, oboe and twin flute obbligati. A high point is the sustained soprano aria 'Die Seele ruht im Jesu Handen' from the lovely BWV 127. Alto and bass are a fraction pedestrian, but one arresting recitative recalls just how refined an Evangelist Peter Pears was in his day. Richter's pacing occasionally grows stodgy, but Teldec's Archiv remastering is first class. Roderic Dunnett
