Lalo/Saint-Saëns: Symphonie espagnole; Cello Concerto in D minor; Violin Concerto No. 1 in A

Scintillating playing from Chung in Lalo’s vibrant masterpiece, and Saint-Saëns’s First Concerto, both inspired by the playing of the celebrated Spanish virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. Chung’s highly charged performances draw idiomatic support from the excellent Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Charles Dutoit. Lalo’s Cello Concerto receives rough-hewn, hectoring, yet hugely compelling treatment from Harrell and Chailly. Strongly recommended. Michael Jameson
