Liszt: De profundis; Piano Concerto in E flat; Totentanz

Seasoned Lisztians probably acquired these world premiere recordings first time around, but if you did happen to miss Steven Mayer’s accomplished performances of three major additions to the Liszt discography, I’d urge you to seize the moment now! De profundis, a monumental ternary-form epic for piano and orchestra, and Liszt’s diabolical showpiece, Totentanz (heard here in Busoni’s little-known edition, based on the original 1849 text), frame Jay Rosenblatt’s reconstruction of a recently exhumed (and modestly proportioned) adjunct to the familiar pair of Liszt concertos.

Vivid recordings, and arresting pianism from Mayer – enthusiastically recommended. Michael Jameson
