Lully Arr. DÕanglebert

An unscrupulous and unpleasant character, Jean-Baptiste Lully nevertheless composed some haunting tunes. This selection of ‘greatest hits’ – overtures, airs and dances, culled chiefly from his operas – was set for the harpsichord by his friend Jean-Henri D’Anglebert, himself a composer of repute whose bold, ornate keyboard music was admired by Bach. Baroque specialist Kenneth Gilbert performs these pieces with great élan, his playing perfectly attuned to both D’Anglebert’s rich elaborations and Lully’s melodic flair. Graham Lock
