Lutoslawski: Symphony No. 3; Les espaces du sommeil

For me, the concluding ten minutes of real drama in Lutoslawski’s Third aren’t matched by sufficient feeling of growth overall. The composer was rarely his own best interpreter; Salonen, on CBS, achieves greater urgency – and an even better recording – and the Los Angeles PO equals the BPO in brilliance. I prefer, too, Shirley-Quirk’s way with the surrealist mysteries of Desnos’s text in Salonen’s more atmospheric Les espaces to Fischer-Dieskau’s here. Those CBS performances are coupled with an excellent account of Messiaen’s Turangalîla Symphony. Keith Potter
